A gym at the center of a warning from Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier is reacting to claims that men have been allowed in the women's locker room.
The AG says that would go against Florida law, but a statement from Life Time Fitness in Palm Beach Gardens claims they are "carefully reviewing the legal interpretation of the Attorney General" so they can "remain in legal compliance."
"I don't think that men should ever be in women's locker rooms. I've never heard or seen anyone else speak of that situation."
Gym member Ross Carter tells CBS 12 News that he and his wife both work out at Life Time and they both feel safe and the wife says she's never experienced a man walking into the women's locker room.
But a woman has come out to say that she reported an incident about a man in a bikini sitting in the sauna with her in the women's locker room. It appears that was the report that led to Uthmeier's warning, though there could be more.
The gym's statement claims that the business is "not relying on the Palm Beach County ordinance to avoid compliance but rather are adhering to our current understanding of the interplay between state and local law."
Here is Life Time's statement released to the media:
“We are aware of the Attorney General’s recent remarks and, despite assertions being made, we are not relying on the Palm Beach County ordinance to avoid compliance but rather are adhering to our current understanding of the interplay between state and local law—as we do in every community where we operate. We are carefully reviewing the legal interpretation of the Attorney General, as the chief law enforcer in the State of Florida, so that we can remain in legal compliance while maintaining an environment in our Palm Beach Gardens club that allows all of our members to use our services safely and respectfully.”
