8-Year-Old Allegedly Bitten by Shark While Snorkeling in Key Largo

Key L:argo, FL - An 8-year-old boy was allegedly bitten by a shark while snorkeling off Key Largo on Labor Day.

The incident occurred at approximately 3:24 p.m. on the oceanside near Key Largo, according to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office.

The child was quickly airlifted to Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami for treatment.

Officials have not released details on the severity of his injuries or his current condition.

Following the incident, the U.S. Coast Guard and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission were notified.

Both agencies are reportedly monitoring the area to ensure public safety and to assess shark activity in the vicinity.

Monroe County authorities advised residents and visitors to exercise caution while entering the water.

Shark bites in the Florida Keys are uncommon, but they can occur, particularly during peak recreational periods when swimmers, snorkelers, and divers are active in coastal waters.

Experts recommend following safety precautions, including avoiding swimming near schools of fish or areas with known shark activity and remaining alert while in the water.

The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the circumstances surrounding the shark bite in coordination with wildlife officials.
