Orlando, FL - Universal Orlando has reopened its Stardust Racers roller coaster at Epic Universe following a fatal incident nearly three weeks ago.

The ride resumed operations on Saturday evening after being closed for inspections and safety reviews.

The closure followed the death of 32-year-old Kevin Rodriguez Zavala, a Kissimmee resident who allegedly suffered fatal injuries after riding the coaster.

Zavala was found unresponsive and later pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.

The Orange County Medical Examiner ruled his death accidental, caused by multiple blunt impact injuries.

During the closure, Universal Orlando conducted a thorough review of the ride with local and state inspectors, the ride manufacturer, and an independent engineering expert.

Officials confirmed the ride was functioning properly and that operational procedures were being followed.

Universal Orlando updated its safety guidelines, including reinforced signage emphasizing rider eligibility requirements, particularly for guests with pre-existing back, neck, or spinal conditions.

Park visitors were seen gathering outside the ride shortly after it reopened.

Guests reported longer wait times due to new safety procedures and described the ride as fast and intense.

Universal Orlando staff monitored operations closely throughout the night to ensure proper functioning and adherence to updated safety protocols.

Universal Orlando President Karen Irwin expressed sympathy for Zavala’s family and emphasized the updates to operational procedures to prevent future incidents.

The reopening marks the first time the ride has operated since the incident, and the park continues to monitor guest safety and compliance with the revised guidelines.

Stardust Racers features dual tracks measuring approximately 5,000 feet and reaches speeds up to 62 miles per hour.

The coaster is part of Universal Orlando’s Epic Universe, which spans 110 acres and includes multiple themed attractions.
