Safety Tips For After The Storm

Just because a storm is over, doesn't mean there isn't anymore danger. Here are some safety tips to keep in mind...

  • When cleaning up debris in your yard, remember that many animals have been displaced due to the storm....and this is Florida! Be careful for snakes and even alligators!
  • Stay out of floodwater. Don't drive in flooded areas as you never really know how deep it could be. Your vehicle could be swept away in moving water. Flood water may also contain many things that can harm your health and make you sick. So wash your hands with soap and water if you come in contact or alcohol-based wipes or sanitizer.
  • If an electrical device gets wet, do not use it.
  • It is safer to use flashlights than candles, but if you need to use candles, make sure you keep them away from anything that can catch fire. Keep a fire extinguisher handy if you have one (or get one for next time!).
  • Be careful with anything that emits carbon monoxide, like generators, charcoal grills, etc. You cannot see or smell carbon monoxide and it can make you very sick or possibly kill. Never you any device that uses gasoline or coal burning equipment inside you home. Keep them 20 feet away from your house and keep doors, vents and windows closed.
  • Be careful near any building that is damaged by the storm. It may be very unsafe and could possibly fall.
  • Of course, stay away from power lines that have fallen or hanging low. Just because the appear to be down, doesn't mean it still isn't receiving electricity.
  • Make sure you have insect repellent with you. Bugs tend to come out once the storm blows through. Don't spray any bug spray, especially ones with deet, on your pet.
  • Stay away from wild animals.
  • Throw away any food you may think went bad. It's not worth the risk. Make sure you listen to any reports from officials about water boiling advisories. Use bottles water until you know your regular water is safe.
  • If you happen to get hurt or hurt yourself cleaning up, get first aid quickly to prevent infection.
